INTERACTIVE: Groove space with space fog

Join us every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month 1pm-4pm at hi-fidelity (200 Anderson Street, Bay 6 Portland, Maine) Get to know your fellow musicians as we have a casual afternoon jam catered to all levels of experience. We will groove on simple digestible forms ranging anywhere from 1 chord to a 4 chord loop. Are we on the verse or the chorus? It doesn’t matter because each jam has a simple, repetitive, and predictable progression (we’re not even going to take it to the bridge). Respect your musical neighbors and leave space for the group to listen to each other and create something unique in the moment.

Small Books and Tall Pours

Join us at the Hi-Fidelity book club, Small Books and Tall Pours every third Saturday at 2:00! This Month we’re reading Clear, by Carys Davies!

1843. On a remote Scottish island, Ivar, the sole occupant, leads a life of quiet isolation until the day he finds a man unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. The newcomer is John Ferguson, an impoverished church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of the stranger's intentions, Ivar takes him into his home, and in spite of the two men having no common language, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile on the mainland, John's wife Mary anxiously awaits news of his mission.

Against the rugged backdrop of this faraway spot beyond Shetland, Carys Davies's intimate drama unfolds with tension and tenderness: a touching and crystalline study of ordinary people buffeted by history and a powerful exploration of the distances and connections between us. Perfectly structured and surprising at every turn, Clear is a marvel of storytelling, an exquisite short novel by a master of the form.

Dave’s Circus of the Stars

Saturday August 30th, all day at Hi-Fidelity is a celebration of everyone’s favorite neighbor, Dave. Maybe you knew Dave from Casablanca Comics, maybe you knew him from open mics around town, maybe he made you a shirt. However you knew Dave, we’re celebrating his life and his impact on our lives at Hi-Fidelity all day on the 30th. The bar will be serving as usual, but we’re doing a potluck as well so bring food to share if you’d like and come hungry. At 7:00 I’ll open the mic for anyone to get up and play some songs or read some poetry or say a few words. No rules, no list, keep it casual and fun. If you have a Dave shirt this is the night to wear it

Small Books and Tall Pours

Join us at the Hi-Fidelity book club, Small Books and Tall Pours every third Saturday at 2:00! This Month we’re reading Sun City by Tove Jannson!

In works like The Summer Book and The True Deceiver, as well as in her many short stories, Tove Jansson was drawn again and again to the everyday life of the aged. Not as a group apart, but as full-blooded people, with as many jealousies, urges, and joys as any other group. And so it is no wonder that in her travels through America in the 1970s, she became fascinated with what was then a particularly American instution, the retirement home, where older people live in their particular tightly knit worlds. She describes this world through several of its residents and employees making their way in an America riven by cultural divides and facing the death of its dream, as they confront their own mortality.
